If you own a Chevy Silverado 2500HD/3500HD or a GMC Sierra 2500HD/3500HD, you actually own one of two generations of the same platform with two different badges. Chevy and GMC share underlying mechanicals, frames, beds, glass, and most hardware across the HD lineup — but the body panels, grilles, headlights, tail lights, and trim packages are different. Two trucks sharing a platform doesn’t mean every part interchanges.
Figuring out which generation you have determines what parts will fit. The good news: GM’s HD lineup has only two generations in the modern era (2015-2026), and the visual difference between them is dramatic.
At Texas Truck Parts & Accessories, we stock OEM take-off body parts for both Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD across K2XX and T1XX years. This guide walks through how to identify your generation, what changed, and which parts cross between Chevy and GMC within each generation.
The Two HD Generations in Plain English
GM’s heavy-duty trucks across 2015-2026 split cleanly into two platforms:
- K2XX Generation (2015-2019) — The “GMTK2XX” platform. Square, blocky body lines. Single-row LED accent strip headlights on upper trims. Standard tailgate (no MultiPro or MultiFlex).
- T1XX Generation (2020-2026) — The “GMT T1XX” platform. All-new design — bigger, more angular, taller. Available MultiPro tailgate (GMC, 2020+) and MultiFlex tailgate (Chevy, 2022+). Mid-cycle refresh in 2024 with new grilles.
Within the T1XX generation, there’s also a meaningful mid-cycle facelift in 2024 that changed grille and front-fascia styling — important for parts buyers because some front-end components changed.
K2XX Generation: 2015-2019 Chevy Silverado HD & GMC Sierra HD
This was the last hurrah of GM’s “square truck” era. The K2XX HD trucks debuted for the 2015 model year (replacing the GMT900-based 2007-2014 HD trucks) and continued largely unchanged through the 2019 model year.

Visual cues for K2XX (2015-2019):
- Body lines: Squared-off, blocky proportions. Less aggressive than what would come in 2020.
- Chevy Silverado HD grille: Large rectangular grille with dual horizontal bars on most trims; HD-specific stacked vertical bar variants on Z71 and High Country
- GMC Sierra HD grille: Chrome chevron-style grille with the iconic Denali honeycomb available on top trim
- Headlights: Projector halogen on Work Truck/LT/SLE trims; LED accents on LTZ/Denali. Single LED strip accent characteristic of this era
- Bed: Steel construction (no aluminum HD beds from either brand in this era). Standard 6 ft 9 in short bed, 8 ft long bed
- Dually configurations: Available on 3500HD only — wide rear quarters with bolt-on fender flares
- Tailgate: Standard manual lift gate. No MultiPro on GMC. No MultiFlex on Chevy. Both makes used basic tailgates with optional EZ-Lift Power Lock
- Cab styles: Regular Cab, Double Cab (extended), and Crew Cab
Powertrain in K2XX HD era:
- Gasoline: Vortec 6.0L V8 (360 hp / 380 lb-ft)
- Diesel: Duramax 6.6L V8 turbo-diesel (LML through 2016, then L5P from 2017+; 397-445 hp / 765-910 lb-ft depending on tuning year)
- Transmissions: Allison 1000 6-speed on diesel; 6-speed automatic on gas
Critical fitment note for K2XX parts shoppers: Beds, tailgates, mirrors, glass, frame components, and most chassis hardware ARE interchangeable between Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD within this generation. However, body panels — grille, fenders, hood, headlights, tail lights, bumpers — are make-specific because the visual identities are different.

T1XX Generation: 2020-2026 Chevy Silverado HD & GMC Sierra HD
The 2020 model year was a clean-sheet redesign. New platform (T1XX), new body, new chassis, new interior. The trucks got taller, wider, more aggressive looking, and packed with new technology.
Early T1XX: 2020-2023

Visual cues for 2020-2023 T1XX:
- Body lines: Angular, aggressive proportions. Taller cabin, sharper character lines down the bodyside
- Chevy Silverado HD grille: Bold horizontal-bar grille across most trims, with vertical chrome elements on Custom/LT. High Country and Z71 versions feature blacked-out variants
- GMC Sierra HD grille: Chrome chevron-style grille — significantly larger and more aggressive than K2XX. Denali version has the famous “C-shaped” LED running lights flanking a unique honeycomb grille pattern
- Headlights: All-new design across both makes. LED standard or available on most trims. Distinctive “C-shape” LED daytime running lights on GMC; horizontal-bar LED signature on Chevy
- Hood: Power-bulge styling on diesel-equipped trucks (functional cooling vents)
- Bed: Still steel construction. Same 6 ft 9 in short bed and 8 ft long bed dimensions
- Dually configurations: Available on 3500HD only — body-integrated fender flares are wider and more sculpted
T1XX Refresh: 2024-2026

Left: 2024-2026 GMC Sierra HD AT4 in Summit White — refreshed front fascia. Right: 2024-2026 Chevy Silverado HD LTZ — refreshed grille and bumper design.
For the 2024 model year, the T1XX platform got a mid-cycle exterior refresh. The grilles changed significantly on both Chevy and GMC, and front-fascia bumper styling was updated. The cab structure and bed remain consistent with 2020-2023, but front-end body parts (grille, bumper, headlights on some trims) are not interchangeable between 2020-2023 and 2024+ trucks.
Critical fitment note for T1XX parts shoppers: Within the T1XX generation, you have THREE meaningful sub-eras: 2020-2021 (no Chevy MultiFlex), 2022-2023 (full feature parity but pre-refresh styling), and 2024-2026 (refreshed front end). Always confirm the specific year range when shopping front-end parts.
MultiPro vs MultiFlex Tailgate Timeline
The six-position power-deployable tailgate has been one of the most talked-about features on GM’s modern HD trucks. Here’s the timeline you need to know.
MultiPro Tailgate (GMC Sierra HD)
The MultiPro tailgate is GMC’s six-position tailgate system, originally introduced on the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 and then added to the 2020 GMC Sierra HD (2500HD and 3500HD) at the platform redesign.
The six modes:
- Primary Gate — Standard tailgate open
- Primary Gate with Load Stop — Inner gate flips up to retain longer cargo
- Easy Access — Inner gate folds down for closer reach into bed
- Easy Access with Load Stop — Same but with the stop deployed
- Inner Gate Load Stop — For carrying loads extended past the tailgate
- Inner Gate Work Surface — Flat work surface at tailgate height with phone/clipboard ledges
The MultiPro tailgate was a major selling point for GMC vs Chevy and stayed exclusive to GMC for the first two model years after the redesign.
MultiFlex Tailgate (Chevy Silverado HD)
The MultiFlex tailgate is Chevy’s equivalent — actually based on the same engineering as the GMC MultiPro. It debuted on the 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 first, then was added to the 2022 Chevy Silverado HD (2500HD and 3500HD) — meaning Chevy HD owners didn’t get a power-deployable inner gate option until the 2022 model year, two model years after their GMC siblings.
The HD tailgate timeline:
- 2015-2019 (K2XX): No MultiPro, no MultiFlex on either Chevy HD or GMC HD. Standard manual tailgate (with optional EZ-Lift Power Lock)
- 2020-2021 (T1XX, early): MultiPro available on GMC Sierra HD. Chevy Silverado HD still standard tailgate only
- 2022-2026 (T1XX, late): MultiPro on GMC Sierra HD AND MultiFlex on Chevy Silverado HD
This is an important fact when you’re shopping tailgates because some sellers list a “MultiPro/MultiFlex tailgate” as compatible across years without specifying it didn’t exist on Chevy HD until 2022.
Powertrain in T1XX HD Era
- Gasoline: 6.6L V8 (401 hp / 464 lb-ft) — replaced the 6.0L Vortec
- Diesel: Duramax 6.6L L5P V8 turbo-diesel (445 hp / 910 lb-ft)
- Transmissions: Allison 10-speed automatic on diesel from 2020+ (replaced 6-speed Allison); 6-speed automatic on gas through 2023, 10-speed from 2024
- Towing: Max 5th-wheel / gooseneck tow ratings of approximately 36,000 lbs on properly configured 3500HD diesel

Chevy vs GMC Parts Cross-Fit Within the Same Generation
Because Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD share the same platform within each generation, many parts cross-fit between the two brands. Here’s a quick reference:
Parts That ARE Interchangeable (Same Generation)
- Bed assembly (same dimensions, same mounting points)
- Tailgate frame and hardware (BUT MultiPro and MultiFlex are visually different and badge-specific)
- Frame and chassis components
- Glass (windshield, side windows, rear glass)
- Mirrors (housings can differ; mounting points the same)
- Door skins (some trim-specific badging differences)
- Interior structural components
Parts That Are NOT Interchangeable (Make-Specific)
- Grille (Chevy-specific vs GMC-specific design)
- Hood emblems and trim
- Front bumper (sometimes — check year)
- Headlights (different LED signature)
- Tail lights (different design and lens pattern)
- Tailgate skin (badging and surface design)
- Wheel center caps and badging

Tailgate Cross-Fit: A Common Customer Question
A common question we get: “Can I put a MultiPro tailgate on my Chevy Silverado?” Or: “Can I install a MultiFlex tailgate on my GMC?”
Mechanically yes, functionally no. The two tailgates use the same hinge mounting points and electrical connectors. You can bolt either tailgate onto either truck within the same generation. But the body badging is different — MultiPro tailgates have GMC badging across the rear, and MultiFlex tailgates have Chevy badging. So the swap is visually mismatched unless you also swap badges or repaint.
The other consideration: tailgate firmware control. The truck’s body control module must recognize the tailgate type to power the inner gate functions correctly. In most cases this works plug-and-play, but some trucks may need a dealer reflash to enable the features.
How to Identify Your Truck in 30 Seconds
Step 1: Check your VIN. Find your VIN on the driver’s-side dash (through the windshield) or on the door jamb sticker. Position 10 of the VIN is the model year code: F=2015, G=2016, H=2017, J=2018, K=2019 (last K2XX), L=2020 (first T1XX), M=2021, N=2022, P=2023, R=2024 (refresh year), S=2025, T=2026.
Step 2: Look at the body proportions.
- Squared-off, blocky truck → K2XX (2015-2019)
- Tall, angular, aggressive with C-shape LEDs (GMC) or horizontal-bar LEDs (Chevy) → T1XX (2020-2026)
Step 3: Look at the front grille (2020+ specifically).
- Single-style grille pattern → pre-refresh T1XX (2020-2023)
- Restyled, more aggressive grille → T1XX refresh (2024-2026)
Step 4: Look at the tailgate.
- Standard manual lift, no power inner gate → either K2XX or basic T1XX
- MultiPro (GMC, multi-mode inner gate) → 2020+ GMC Sierra HD
- MultiFlex (Chevy, multi-mode inner gate) → 2022+ Chevy Silverado HD

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a 2018 Chevy Silverado 2500HD tail light fit a 2021?
No. The 2020 T1XX redesign was a complete platform change. K2XX (2015-2019) parts don’t fit T1XX (2020-2026) trucks.
Will a 2020 GMC Sierra 2500HD bed fit a 2023 Sierra HD?
Yes. Within T1XX (2020-2026), the bed dimensions and mounting points are consistent.
Can I put a MultiPro tailgate on my 2021 Chevy Silverado HD?
Mechanically yes (the hinge points and connectors match within the T1XX platform), but the GMC badging will be on the tailgate. Most buyers swap to a MultiFlex tailgate instead for visual consistency.
Did the 2024 refresh change the bed?
No — the bed is consistent across T1XX 2020-2026. The 2024 refresh changed front-end styling (grille, headlights, bumper) but not the cargo area.
Are the wheels and tires the same between Chevy HD and GMC HD?
Yes — wheel bolt patterns, hub geometry, and stock tire sizes are shared because they’re the same platform. Center caps and lug nut accents differ by brand.
