If you own a Chevy Silverado 2500HD/3500HD or a GMC Sierra 2500HD/3500HD, you’ve probably noticed the two trucks look almost identical from 20 feet away. That’s not a coincidence — they’re the same truck built on the same platform at the same GM assembly plants. The differences are mostly cosmetic.
For parts buyers, this is great news. Most replacement parts for your Silverado HD will fit a Sierra HD of the same year range, and vice versa. But “most” isn’t “all” — there are specific differences in trim badging, grille designs, available tailgate features, and a few other details that matter when you’re sourcing parts.
This guide breaks down the exact compatibility between Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD across both major platforms (K2XX and T1XX) and tells you exactly which parts you can swap and which you can’t.
TL;DR: What’s interchangeable between Chevy and GMC HD trucks
Same year range, same configuration (SRW vs DRW):
- Truck beds — fully interchangeable
- Cab structure — same dimensions, same mounting
- Frame and chassis — identical
- Engine and transmission — same options (6.6L gas V8, Duramax diesel)
- Most interior components — identical with badging differences
- Tailgates — interchangeable hardware-wise, but badging is different (Chevy bowtie vs GMC logo)
- Tail lights — interchangeable shells; LED vs halogen depends on trim
- Front bumpers — generally NOT interchangeable (different grille openings, different style)
- Grille assemblies — completely different designs
- Front fenders and hood — generation-specific to Chevy or GMC styling
Below we’ll cover both platforms in detail.

Quick history: why Chevy and GMC HD trucks are basically the same truck
General Motors has produced both the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra as essentially badge-engineered versions of the same truck since the 1999 model year. The mechanical platform, frame, body structure, and most components are shared. GMC positions Sierra as the “professional grade” sibling with slightly upgraded interior materials and unique grille/headlight designs on higher trims, while Chevy positions Silverado as the everyman work truck.
For heavy-duty trucks (2500HD / 3500HD), this has been true across every recent generation. The current 2020-2026 trucks share GM’s T1XX platform. The previous 2015-2019 trucks shared the K2XX platform.
2015-2019 Chevy Silverado HD vs GMC Sierra HD (K2XX Platform)
The K2XX platform debuted in 2014 for the 1500 series and in 2015 for the heavy-duty 2500/3500 trucks. This generation runs through model year 2019 for HD trucks (the 1500 platform was updated earlier).
What’s interchangeable across 2015-2019 Chevy and GMC HD:
Tailgates — One-piece tailgates are mechanically interchangeable. Chevy versions have a Chevy bowtie emblem; GMC versions have a GMC logo. If you’re buying a take-off tailgate, you can use either as long as you don’t mind swapping the badge (a 10-minute job with a heat gun and adhesive remover, or just leave it).
Truck beds — Bed assemblies are fully interchangeable between Chevy and GMC of the same year range and SRW/DRW configuration.
Tail lights — Tail light housings interchange. Halogen vs LED depends on the trim (LTZ, High Country, Denali typically have LED; lower trims have halogen). Buy the right type for your truck — not the right brand.
Side mirrors, side moldings, door handles — Identical between Chevy and GMC.
Interior components — Dash, seats, console, trim panels — nearly all interchangeable. Some Denali-specific interior trim pieces (wood grain, leather grade) are unique to GMC top trims.
What’s NOT interchangeable across 2015-2019:
Front bumpers — Chevy and GMC have different grille designs, which means different bumper cutouts and different style. A 2015-2019 Silverado HD front bumper won’t bolt onto a Sierra HD of the same year (different mounting and aesthetics).
Grilles — Completely different designs. Chevy uses the bowtie-centered horizontal bar style; GMC uses its signature three-bar style on lower trims and the Denali-specific grille on top trim.
Hoods — Different sculpting (Chevy is flatter; GMC has more aggressive lines on the Denali specifically).
Front fenders — Same chassis mounting but different exterior body lines and badge locations.

2020-2026 Chevy Silverado HD vs GMC Sierra HD (T1XX Platform)

The 2020 model year brought the all-new T1XX platform for HD trucks (the 1500 was already on T1XX since 2019). This is the current generation and runs through 2026.
The 2020-2026 generation also introduced the signature tailgate innovations: Chevy’s Multi-Flex Tailgate and GMC’s MultiPro Tailgate. Both are mechanically identical six-function tailgates, but with different badging and slightly different button layouts.
What’s interchangeable across 2020-2026 Chevy and GMC HD:
Tailgates (standard one-piece) — Standard tailgates interchange between Chevy and GMC; just swap the emblem if you care.
Tailgates (Multi-Flex / MultiPro) — This is a key point. The six-function articulating tailgate sold as “Multi-Flex” on Chevy and “MultiPro” on GMC is the same physical part with different badging and slightly different control button graphics. If you find a take-off Multi-Flex tailgate (Chevy) and you own a GMC, it will install and function identically — just with Chevy badging unless you swap the emblem.
Truck beds — Same bed assemblies between Chevy and GMC for both SRW and DRW configurations.
Tail lights — Tail light housings interchange. The trim hierarchy for LED vs halogen is similar:
- Chevy LT/LTZ/High Country: Typically LED
- Chevy WT/Custom: Typically halogen
- GMC SLE/SLT/AT4/Denali: Typically LED
- GMC Pro: Typically halogen
Mirrors, badging removed, side moldings, door handles — Identical.

What’s NOT interchangeable across 2020-2026:
Front bumpers — Each truck has its own bumper design. Chevy bumpers are styled around the Chevy grille; GMC bumpers are styled around the wider GMC grille (which differs significantly between SLE, SLT, AT4, and Denali trims).
Grilles — Heavily redesigned for both. Chevy has the multi-bar horizontal grille; GMC has its three-bar with chrome surround on lower trims and the unique Denali grille on top. Not interchangeable.
Hoods — Different sculpting and emblem placement.
Front fenders — Different body lines.

Cross-generation compatibility: 2015-2019 vs 2020-2026
Just to be clear — parts from one platform generation do NOT fit the other. A 2018 Silverado HD tailgate will not fit a 2021 Silverado HD, even though they’re both Chevy. The K2XX (2015-2019) and T1XX (2020-2026) platforms are different chassis with different body dimensions, different mounting points, and different sensor harness routing.
When you’re buying parts, always verify the year range first, then make/model, then trim/configuration. We organize our YMM (year-make-model) pages this way for exactly this reason — pick your year range first to avoid ordering the wrong part.
Common compatibility questions
“I have a 2018 GMC Sierra 2500HD. Can I use a tailgate from a 2017 Chevy Silverado 2500HD?”
Yes. Both are K2XX platform, same year range. Just swap the badge (or live with the Chevy bowtie — many owners do).
“I have a 2022 Chevy Silverado 3500HD DRW. Can I install a Multi-Flex tailgate from a 2021 GMC Sierra 3500HD DRW?”
Yes — almost. The Multi-Flex (Chevy) and MultiPro (GMC) hardware is identical, but GMC’s MultiPro typically has the GMC logo emblem in the center of the tailgate. You can either swap the emblem or leave it. Either tailgate will physically fit and function identically.
“Will an LED tail light from a Denali fit my Sierra Pro?”
Mechanically yes (same housing/mounting). Electrically — the LED tail light expects the truck’s wiring harness to drive LED loads. If your Pro originally had halogen tail lights, the wiring may not have the LED driver circuitry, which can cause issues like rapid-flashing turn signals (hyperflash). Look for the matched LED set including connectors and wiring adapters, or have a mechanic verify your truck’s harness.
“I’m restoring a 2016 Sierra Denali. Will the Denali-specific chrome trim from a 2018 Silverado LTZ work?”
Generally no. Denali-specific trim (badging, chrome surrounds, interior wood/leather) is unique to GMC’s top trim. Cross-shopping Chevy LTZ trim won’t give you a Denali equivalent. Source Denali-specific parts when restoring a Denali.
“Will an aftermarket front bumper for a Chevy Silverado HD work on my Sierra HD?”
This depends on the bumper manufacturer. Some aftermarket bumpers are made specifically for one or the other (Chevy or GMC). Others are designed as “Chevy/GMC” universal fitment with adjustable brackets or trim panels. Check the manufacturer’s fitment guide before ordering — we list compatible models on every aftermarket bumper product page.
Why this matters when buying take-off parts
Because Chevy and GMC HD trucks share so many components, the pool of available take-off parts is effectively doubled if you’re willing to swap a badge. When a new GMC Sierra is delivered to a dealer with the customer upgrading to a step-deploy tailgate, that take-off standard tailgate becomes available — and it’ll fit your Chevy Silverado HD of the same generation.
This is one of the reasons our take-off inventory for Chevy/GMC HD trucks is so deep: we source from both makes simultaneously and inspect every unit for fitment regardless of which side of the GM family it came from.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Are 2500HD and 3500HD parts interchangeable?
Mostly yes for body parts (bumpers, hoods, fenders, tailgates), but the 3500HD DRW (dual rear wheel) configuration has wider rear fenders and a wider bed than 2500HD or 3500HD SRW. Always verify SRW vs DRW before ordering.
Q: Is the Duramax diesel the same in Chevy and GMC?
Identical engine. The 6.6L L5P (current) and earlier L5P/LML/LB7 Duramax variants are the exact same engine block, transmission options, and tuning between Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD of the same year. Service parts (filters, sensors, injectors) interchange.
Q: What about cab dimensions — regular cab, double cab, crew cab?
Cab dimensions are identical between Chevy and GMC of the same year range and cab style. A regular cab Silverado has the same cab as a regular cab Sierra. Same for double cab and crew cab.
Q: Can I install a GMC Denali interior into my Chevy LTZ?
Most components yes (seats, door panels, console), but the dashboard trim, gauge cluster face, and steering wheel logo are make-specific. It’s possible but it’s a project — most owners stick with the trim level they have.
Q: Are the AT4 (GMC) and Trail Boss / Custom Trail Boss (Chevy) off-road packages interchangeable?
The suspension, skid plates, and many off-road-specific components are shared between AT4 (GMC) and Trail Boss (Chevy). Cosmetic trim is brand-specific. If you’re upgrading a base truck to off-road spec, you can source from both makes.
