Two Ford Super Duty tailgates can look identical in a thumbnail and still be wrong for the same truck. One has the fold-out step and the other does not. One has a hole for the backup camera, another came off a truck with the camera still in it, and a third has a push-button release instead of a manual handle. Then there are King Ranch and Platinum gates with their own trim.
This guide is the Ford-specific companion to our general tailgate features explainer. It goes through how we describe Super Duty tailgates on our listings, what each line means, and what to check on your own truck before you order.
Year Ranges We List
Super Duty tailgates are listed by the model-year range they came from:
- 2017–2019 and 2020–2022 — the aluminum-body generation, before and after its refresh.
- 2023–2026 — the current generation, and most of the tailgates we list.
- We occasionally list 2011–2016 gates as well.
Order the range that includes your model year and do not assume gates cross between ranges. Many of our 2023–2026 listings name F-250, F-350 and F-450 in the title; buy the one that names your model, and ask us if your truck is a less common configuration. If you are not sure which generation you have, our Ford Super Duty generation guide shows how to tell.
Step or No Step
Ford’s tailgate step folds out of the gate with a flip-up grab handle to help you climb into the bed. You can spot it from behind the truck: a step gate has the step and handle panel built into the inside of the gate. Our listings show Step: Yes or Step: No, and the title says “w/ Step” or “No Step”.
Match what your truck has. If you replace a step gate with a plain one, you lose the step. If you want to add the step, buy a step gate for your year range. The step adds weight and size, which also affects how the gate ships (see shipping below).

Camera Hole, Camera Included, Camera Harness
On Super Duty trucks with a backup camera, the camera usually sits in the tailgate next to the handle. Three different things can be true about a replacement gate, and our listings keep them separate:
| Listing says | What it means |
|---|---|
| Camera Hole: Yes | The gate has the opening for a camera. The camera is not included unless the listing says so. |
| Camera: Included | A camera came with the gate. This is uncommon on take-off tailgates. |
| Camera Harness: Not included / Included | Whether the wiring that runs through the gate to the camera is part of the sale. |
A camera hole is not a camera. If your truck has a tailgate camera, buy a gate with a camera hole and plan to move your camera over. If the listing shows the harness as not included, you will also need to transfer your truck’s harness or source one. If your truck has no tailgate camera, a gate with a camera hole will have an opening you need to fill.
Our listings with “Camera” in the title use it as shorthand for the camera provision. Always check the specification table: on recent listings we spell out “Camera Hole” and “Camera Harness” line by line.
Manual Handle or Automatic Push-Button
Some 2023–2026 gates have a manual pull handle. Others have an automatic push-button handle that is color-matched to the gate. Where we have confirmed it, the listing shows Handle: Manual or Handle: Automatic (push-button), and the condition notes say whether the handle is included.
Match the handle type to your truck. If your gate opens with a push button or a remote release, ask us before buying a manual-handle gate, and the other way round, because the release hardware and wiring on the truck side need to match.

Trim Tailgates: King Ranch, Platinum and Others
Higher trims have their own tailgate styling, such as King Ranch lettering and Platinum details. Our listings show a Trim line when a gate came from one of these trucks. A trim gate will carry that trim’s look onto your truck, so if you want a standard gate, avoid the trim listings, and if you are replacing a trim gate, look for the matching trim.
Trim gates still have the same step, camera and handle variables, so check those lines too. Factory badges and appliqués can be missing or damaged on take-off gates; the photos and condition notes show what is there.

Lights and Add-Ons
Some take-off gates come with something the previous owner added, such as aftermarket tailgate lights. When we know about it, the listing says so, for example “Aftermarket lights installed”. You can keep those parts or remove them; just know they are not factory equipment.
Paint and Condition
Tailgates are listed with their factory color, such as Oxford White, Agate Black, Carbonized Grey or Race Red. Match the paint code on your door-jamb sticker using our paint code reference. Take-off gates show normal wear, and each listing has its own photos and condition notes: scuffs, scratches, dings, creases, a missing logo or top trim that needs attention. Read them before you buy.
How Ford Tailgates Ship
On our site, step tailgates generally ship by LTL freight, and no-step tailgates generally ship as a large boxed parcel. Your cart shows the shipping method before you pay. Parcel items ship free. Freight ships free to commercial addresses with dock or forklift access, and residential freight delivery is $200. You can also arrange local pickup in Sugar Land by phone. Our freight delivery guide explains what to check when a freight shipment arrives.
How to Check Your Truck Before Ordering
- Model year and model. Find them on the door-jamb sticker or your registration.
- Step. Lower your tailgate and look for the fold-out step and grab handle.
- Camera. Look for the camera next to the tailgate handle, and check whether your truck shows a rear camera view.
- Handle. Check whether your gate opens with a manual pull handle or a push-button / power release.
- Trim. Note any King Ranch, Platinum or other trim styling on the gate.
- Paint code. Read it from the door-jamb sticker.
- Photos. Take a photo of your current tailgate, front and back. It answers most questions quickly.
If anything is unclear, send us your VIN and a photo of your tailgate and we will help you check a listing before you buy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a tailgate with a camera hole include the camera?
No, not unless the listing says “Camera: Included”. A camera hole is only the opening. Check the Camera Harness line too.
Can I put a step tailgate on a truck that had a plain one?
Buy a step gate listed for your model-year range and your truck’s camera and handle setup, and confirm with us before ordering. Your installer can tell you whether anything else on the truck needs to change.
Will a 2020–2022 tailgate fit my 2023 Super Duty?
Do not assume it will. 2023 started a new generation, and we list gates by the range they came from. Order the range that includes your model year.
Is the handle included?
When we have confirmed it, the condition notes say so, for example “Includes a manual handle” or “Includes an automatic push-button color-matched handle”. If a listing does not mention the handle, ask us.
Do you install tailgates?
No. Texas Truck Parts & Accessories sells parts only and does not offer installation.
